RE: Very Upset

Don't cancel it, just quit paying it, then let them get their money somewhere else...I have a problem with all insurance companies, can't live with 'em and you can't live without 'em.
Thats what I would do.
hpk
If you just don't renew the policy I'm sure there will be no fee. You won't get a refund for the prorated policy, but no fee. It's when you cancel during the MIDDLE of a policy before your "contract" with them is up and expect a refund do they charge you a cancellation fee. This is VERY common practice in ANY business in which you cancel a contract mid term.

RE: Very Upset

Typical practice. You are creating paperwork for them which will incur a cost. Unfair to pass that on to the rest of their customers, so they are going to charge you. Sounds reasonable to me if you are no longer going to have any policies with them.

RE: Generators - Honda EU2000i

Why would you change the gas and change the oil? While gas is not what it used to be, I have plenty of equipment that has gas that is a year or older and EVERYTHING starts and runs like new. Add some sea foam occasionally to help remove the varnish gas leaves in the carbs and you will be just fine. Best to leave the tank FULL of gas so condensation doesn't let water in, which is usually what causes most problems.

RE: Go figure. Theres two of them here.

kottfam6wi, where did you get the figure of 20 percent? According to the latest issue of Motorhome magazine, the urea injection diesel engine makers are using to meet the latest EPA regulations, the same technology they have been using to meet European regulations for many, many miles, actually allows the engines to gain back some of the mileage they lost using older, exhaust recirculation technology to meet earlier standards.
As to an ulterior motive by politicians, I don't want to get into a political discussion.
My info came straight from a MB engineer. I use Sprinter vans for my business and had the opportunity to be at the dealership when Mercedes had some of their reps there. The discussion about the smart car came up and was quite interesting. He said 20% was actually being generous.

RE: Go figure. Theres two of them here.

kottfam6wi, that's right in that MB has decided not to modify their diesel Smart car to meet US regulations, and, of course, they can therefore not import it. But it is entirely their choice, the same kind of choice they made when they decided to import their other diesel models, including the Sprinter. Many other auto manufacturers make the same sorts of decisions all the time, which accounts for the very large number of autos available in Europe but not in the US. VW sold diesel Golfs and Jettas for several years that got 50+ mpg. Their current US offerings do not reach that level of fuel economy. VW continues to sell very fuel efficient diesels in Europe but they don't offer them in the US. There are lots of reasons for these decisions, but I think it's not fair to blame US air quality and crash-worthiness standards for the automakers decisions. I think their decisions are entirely based on their reading of the US market. I don't necessarily agree that they are right, but the automakers are the ones who decide.
MB choose not to modify the diesel smart car to meet US EPA regulations because the fuel economy would be reduced by twenty percent. That's right TWENTY percent. I support them standing their ground on this, it's the US that needs to learn to adjust our nonsense regulations that cause lower fuel economy. Ulterior motive by our politicians maybe?

RE: Go figure. Theres two of them here.

The decision not to import the diesel Smart into the US is entirely Mercedes' responsibility. MB imports other diesels, and other manufacturers import diesels as well.
You are partially correct. MB is unwilling to change their design to meet US EPA approvals. So, as is, US will not allow MB to import.

Seems kinda stupid to ban a vehicle that gets 88 mpg, but that's the US for you. Really makes you wonder what their real motive is :(

RE: Go figure. Theres two of them here.

As long as you are not importing it there no restrictions. If there were then there would be a whack of Canadian vehicles unable to cross into the States. Besides it has a smaller carbon foot print than most vehicles out there.,,,that and it gets 72 MPG. :)
They were told at the border that because so many people were illegally importing them, that they were not even allowed to take it across the border. I don't know this first hand, but I have TWO friends that have run into the same problem. Just something to check before you try it and have to change plans underway.

RE: Go figure. Theres two of them here.

We were wondering if we were going to see any other Smart Car enthusiasts with the CDI (diesel) either in tow or trailered. Well we just pulled into the Anaheim RV park and low and behold there are two of them here. One in an enclosed trailer and one in a Renegade Toy hauler. Both CDI's. We'll be trailering ours when we do pull it but we have one more year of pulling the little rig for our central American trip. Sure miss the smart right now though. :(
I don't think you are allowed to bring a smart car with diesel across your border into America, are you? I've had friends that have tried and got turned around at the border. They said it doesn't meet US EPA requirements. May want to check into that before you make plans

RE: Where to place pressure regulator

It is all personal preference. I like my regulator and filter right at the camper so anything that may be picked up from the hose is filtered out. Only downside this way is the hose could be over pressurized and burst, but I doubt it, and it's outside so it's not going to do any damage like if inside plumbing would.

RE: When winterizing

Atwood water heaters do NOT use an anode rod as Suburban water heaters do. If you have a plastic drain plug, you most likely have an Atwood water heater. I remember something in the Atwood manual about the inner lining of the tank does something like an anode rod.
I use a long plastic wand nozzle to flush out the white chunks before winterizing. I was surprised how much of that gunk came out of my water heater this time.
Atwood water heater tanks are aluminum. Aluminum does not rust, so no need for an anode rod

RE: When winterizing

That will not occur if you have a filter on the intake from the water supply. The better ones are around $40 for the filter, you need to replace every year.
While a good filter may help, there is no filter that will remove all calcium. If there was, water softners would be obsolete. Even soft water contains some amounts of calcium.

RE: When winterizing

can some one tell me FOR SURE what is the white chunky stuff that comes out of the water heater every time I have winterized my 04 cougar ? I assume it is what ever the Ano-rod has collected but what is it! I am looking for-- IT IS, not PROBABLY.
They are calcium deposits. They will eat a steel tank which is why they use anode rods. The anode rod is softer metal than the tank and the calcium will attack that first (hopefully)

RE: Mythbusters gas mileage test, using golf ball technology

I'll have to look for that episode. Their results are much different than Popular Mechanic's test of a dimpled vinyl wrap.

Those dimples are no where near deep enough to cause much effect.

RE: Trick or Treat ?

I'm thinking those 10 kids are in a limited income home and don't understand why they can't have the candy other kids get. Perhaps the Halloween thing is one of their bright spots they will remember growing up.
We live in an area that is heavily frequented by lower income single parent families on Halloween. A parent will drive in and drop them off at the entrance. Initially I was a little offended, but then these kids don't know the difference and are just enjoying the whole trick or treat thing. It's the parents who know where to go to get the best return on their effort, but we can't hold that against the kids.
I don't think the parents are worried about the "return on their effort." I think many of the lower income parents are worried what may happen to their kids if the let them go trick or treating in the hood. Worried about what may be in their candy when they get home, if they make it home at all.
Lighten up and don't worry about such stupid, trivial things

RE: Wisconsin Fall Rally October 9th - 11th 2009

Anyone going on any more camping trips before the weather sets in:@ We're almost done puting our trailer to bed for the season, a few more items to bring in the house and a little TLC then we're done till spring :(
All done with maintence, repairs, and winterizing here :) Every thing has been emptied and cleaned, just have to vacuum and remake the beds. Then off to hibernation :( Not tucking it away too tight though as we may use it over the winter.
